The popular snack beloved since its release in 1978, Tabekko Doubutsu (Dream Animals), is getting a long-awaited movie adaptation “Tabekko Doubutsu: THE MOVIE.” The film is set to hit theaters in spring 2025.
MARZA will be in charge of the CG animation production for the movie.
A long-seller available in over 20 countries, Tabekko Doubutsu crackers are the shape of animals with the name of the animal printed in English on the surface. Sweets maker GINBIS CO., LTD. created the educational snack with the theme “deliciously, enjoyably eat and learn.” Products featuring the animal characters that appear on the package have exploded in popularity over the last few years, and the wait is over for fans all around the world dreaming of a movie adaptation!
■Japan’s top staff join forces to create a world-class, “delicious” tale
Hitoshi Takekiyo, known for “After School Midnighters,” will direct the film, and popular actor Tetsuhiro Ikeda
will pen the screenplay. The animation will be produced MARZA ANIMATION PLANET, the studio behind “Lupin III: THE FIRST,” “Sonic the Movie,” and “Harlock: Space Pirate,” which has continued to use the latest CG technology to create world-renowned entertainment.
Fourty-six years have passed since Tabekko Doubutsu first hit the shelves. Bringing one of Japan’s representative snacks to the screen was the brainchild of TBS TV producer Kotaro Sudo. “In the present era, communication via social media is increasing and in-person communication is on the decline. When I considered the relationship between people, I remembered that we share snacks,” he commented.
“Smiles enrich our lives. We share those smiles with our friends. It is precisely because of this social media-focused era that I wanted to tell a story of smiles, friends, and mutual understanding through growth with Tabekko Doubutsu. The snack has long been loved by people all over the world, and its universal characters appeal to fans of all ages.”
